I’m not going to write one of my epic thinkpieces on this, partly because I’m too tired, partly because I think you should go see it for yourself and partly because I don’t feel comfortable distilling an exhibition about an entire culture into a badly written and confusing blog post.
Anyway, this exhibition is exhaustive: it covers the mesmerising, hypnotic, minimalist gamelan music (my personal fave and specific area of interest), it covers the principles at the centre of Balinese culture, their religion, mythology, food, art, healing and, most memorably, their methods of entertainment, more specifically dancing, masks and costumes and shadow puppetry.
I really urge you to go.
